Upside Down

It’s totally shit,

Isn’t it?

Everything’s upside down,

The wrong way round.

To feel love so dear

As sickness creeps near.

To breathe baby-scented skin

As fear sinks in.

What can we do?

I don’t have a clue.

But know in your bones

You are not alone.

In the darkest room

Don’t choke on the gloom.

Just outside is love;

Just below, just above.

If you open the door,

There’s an orderly queue;

A mile long or more

Ready to catch you.

When life is upside down

I wrote this poem today for two friends who are very dear to me.

They had a baby last week.

A big boom of joy!

Then got walloped with news of a terminal illness in the family.

Bang!

Life can really give it to you both barrels sometimes can’t it?

As a friend it’s a strange reality to share in the happiness and share in the sadness at the same time so I can’t imagine what it is like being in the middle of that dynamic and I wish that I could fix it somehow. Of course I can’t.

All I can do is offer my love and support whenever it’s needed.

My friends in question are creative.  Things they have made me adorn my home.  So here is my offering, in poetic form.
