I wrote this poem on parenthood a while ago (before my birthday in May, as the eagle-eyed will spot).

I wanted to capture the highs and lows of parenthood.

What do you think?

What does it mean to me?
A mum of two boys.
Aged thirty-three.
Marriage hanging
By a weathered thread;
Two night-shifts in,
Desperate for bed.
Looking at your husband
With love unknown;
You made these little people,
You’re watching them grow.
Crushing and flattening,
Entirely drained.
Guilt and self-doubt,
Swiftly engrained.
Wondering, sometimes,
Am I going insane?
Sunshine and light,
Blue sky days.
Holding them tight,
As they thrill and amaze.
Feeling life pass
Too fast, in a haze.
Fear in your stomach,
For at some point ahead,
You won’t know if your child
Is at home in their bed.
They’ll be out in the world
Finding their way,
Circling your mind.
Each moment.
Each day.
Love in every little thing,
Every moment shared.
Being brave,
When you think you can’t;
Holding on when you’re scared.
Trying to do your best.
Wondering if it’s enough.
Reminding yourself:
Kids need your love and your time
Everything else is just stuff.
Being at home.
Photos on walls.
Stacking up books.
Learning to crawl.
Watching you play.
Seeing you laugh.
Trying to make up
A noise for giraffe.
Sitting in the quiet,
Just us four.
Knowing right there,
You couldn’t have more.
